Director Bio :
Seemab is an award-winning writer/director and producer from Pakistan. She is an alumna of the Locarno OD Producers Lab, Biennale College Cinema and Berlinale Talents, and a graduate of the London Film School. Her documentary Zahida, was broadcast on Al Jazeera and won the Audience Award at Tasveer SAFF. Her films have screened in Uppsala, FNC Montreal, Dok Leipzig, Sheffield Doc Fest, Geneva Contemporary Art Centre and many international festivals. Her short film Sandstorm (Mulaqat) premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival and in competition at Sundance 2022.
Seemab Gul è una scrittrice, regista e produttrice pakistana pluripremiata. Ha frequentato i laboratori di alta formazione di Locarno OD Producers Lab, Biennale College Cinema e Berlinale Talents. Laureata alla London Film School, il suo documentario “Zahida” è stato trasmesso dall'emittente televisivo Al Jazeera, vincendo successivamente il Premio del Pubblico al Festival di Tasveer. I suoi film hanno partecipato a molti festival internazionali come Uppsala, FNC Montreal, Dok Leipzig, Sheffield Doc Fest e Geneva Contemporary Art Centre. Il suo cortometraggio “Mulaqat” (Sandstorm) è stato presentato in anteprima alla 78ª Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia e in seguito ha partecipato in concorso al Sundance 2022.
Director Statement :
This coming-of-age story navigates the tricky terrain of internet dating in a conservative Muslim society. The film questions the objectification of the female body and its relationship to honour in Pakistani culture. Focusing on female agency, this personal and political film dramatises the desire to gain freedom from harsh societal constraints.
Questa storia di formazione si muove nel difficile terreno delle relazioni via internet in una società musulmana conservatrice. Il film mette in discussione l’oggettivazione del corpo femminile e il suo rapporto con l’onore nella cultura pakistana. Focalizzandosi sull’agire femminile, questo film personale e politico mette in scena il desiderio di raggiungere la libertà dalle dure costrizioni sociali.
